As I sit here in my makeshift office, the weather outside is COLD. Now, I realize that cold is relative. While we are suffering with 26 degrees above zero, in Fairbanks, Alaska, 26 is shirtsleeve and golfing weather. What is cold for me, may be comfortable for someone from the north. Yet, if we go further south, 60 degrees may be cold to folks in Florida, while up here, that is jacket weather.

The reality of cold is that cold isn’t a thing. Cold is merely the absence of heat. This means that the less heat we have, the less warm it feels. We never truly feel cold, we just feel less warm. So, the key to feeling warmer is to apply more heat.

Now, heat is movement. The lower in temperature we get, the slower molecules and atoms move. (I realize for you physicists and other scientists, this is over-simplification, but work with me, please.) As we get closer to absolute zero, the less movement among the atoms. So truly feeling cold has everything to do with heat.

Now that we have established that, I have another question to ask, how is the heat in your spirit? Just as heat is needed for the physical world to work, so is warmth of the heart needed for your spirit to work. So is your spirit warm, even if the outside world is not. How do you keep your heart warm?

Fire has always been the primary way of getting things to warm up. Fire can warm up anything and almost everything, including your soul.

In fact, it was fire that got the church moving in the very beginning. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit came down in the form of fire to bestow itself upon the waiting disciples. When the fire storm was over, the disciples preached the gospel, and the church grew by 3000. Think about it, the church was at a standstill, (lack of heat) and then the fire reigns down from heaven and jumpstarts a movement that changes the world.

It was the warming of the Heart that got John Wesley moving in Aldersgate. (I had to let my Methodism come out.)

How are you warming your spirit? Are you seeking the fire of the Holy Spirit, or are you just trying to get through the cold times of life on your own? It has been my experience that getting active in your faith goes a long way to warming your spirit and heart.

Do you and your church a favor. Stoke your spiritual fire. Get involved in your church. Make time for Bible study and worship. Pray and do your devotionals. Gather with others to discuss and learn scripture. Get involved in helping others. Read the Bible just for the sake of reading. Keep the fire burning and let Christ keep you warm.

Just a thought.

Shalom My Friends and I hope to see you in church.
