The Doniphan High School (DHS) Speech and Debate team achieved remarkable success at the Cape Central High School tournament on Feb. 27, bringing home seven wins.

The team secured five first-place victories, a second-place, and a third-place win, showcasing exceptional talent and dedication.

Among the standout performers, Ka’Marea Johnson claimed first place in prose, while Marissa Jay and Laynee Martin took first in duo interpretation.

Nathan Christian and Lilly Sherman excelled in duet acting, earning the top spot in the competition, and Marissa Jay also triumphed in dramatic interpretation.

Alyssa Meyers impressed judges with her storytelling skills, securing another first-place win for the team.

Zayvean Gehlbach achieved second place in Extemporaneous speaking, and he, along with Connor Sisco, earned third place in duet acting.

Jennifer Thornton, DHS English and Drama teacher and the MSHSAA Speech and Debate Coach/Club Sponsor, expressed her pride in the team’s performance.

“I was really proud of the team’s performance at Cape. There are some new faces that have really broken out this year, which is always wonderful to see,” said Thornton.

Looking ahead with confidence, she added, “I am excited for districts in a couple of weeks.”
