Vocational programs at the Current River Career Center at Doniphan R-I were proven to be among the best in the district, as six students came back with state qualifying wins from competitions which were held Feb. 2-8, during “Skills Week.”

Each of the competitions is judged by experts in the industries represented, to ensure that students are learning the real-world skills employers demand from entry-level professionals.

Welding and carpentry students competed in Poplar Bluff.

Kameron Ritchey claimed a first place win in carpentry, demonstrating skill in framing and stair construction.

Carpenters were judged on accuracy, ability to read and interpret blueprints, workmanship, safety, and the proper use of tools, equipment, and materials.

Doniphan sent three welding teams to district competition.

The welders were given drawings and a set of welding procedure specifications that conform to the latest edition of the American Welding Society standards.

The team of Harley Elliott, Kendal Schroeder and Briar Boyd completed their project with a second place win.

Nursing and automotive competitions were held in Kennett.

Competitors were asked to demonstrate knowledge and skill in performing personal care, encouraging patient independence, assisting with ambulation, and standard infection control procedures used in basic nurse assisting.

As part of the competition the students performed CPR and measured vital signs, while showing knowledge in basic anatomy, communications skills, legal/ethical issues and employment skills.

With first and second place wins, respectively, Lily Sherman and Paishence Bissette-Schrimsher will advance to state. Marley Kennon, secured a fourth place win in that category.

Only the first and second place winners at districts qualify for state competition, which will be held in June.
