Circuit Thoughts

Why do we wait? I know, this is an interesting way to start a column. But, think about it, why do we wait? How many of us wait until the little light comes on next to the E before we put gas in the car? How many wait until the absolute last day to pay a bill? How many of us as kids waited until five minutes before Mom got back home before we started cleaning? (I also wonder how many of you grinned at that reference.)

The point is, we wait until we can’t wait any longer. I don’t think this is procrastination, but an actual human trait. We wait. But why do we wait to listen to God until after something has happened?

Mark 5 has the story of a dying daughter of a synagogue leader and a story of a chronically ill woman woven together in a miracle story. Jesus heals them both. But folks, why did they wait?

The woman was sick for 12 years. Jesus had been preaching for at least 2 by now, why did she not go as soon as she heard? The girl was 12 years old and dying. She had been chronically sick most of her life. Why did her father wait until now, on her death bed, to call out to Jesus?

We can question these folks and wonder, but we all do the same thing. It is unfortunate that a major life changing devastation brings us to call on Christ. For some reason we see Him as the last-ditch effort. Doesn’t it make more sense to call on him first?

We send in the starters, the best players to begin a game. We put our best foot forward when we are trying to win that job, or nail that interview. We do our best when we are trying to impress someone or win their hearts. But when it comes to Christ, we wait, until we can’t wait anymore. I find this intriguing. The fact that we put the Son of God on our 3rd team list, (for many Christ isn’t ever picked for the second team) and we expect Him to deliver boggles my mind. Isn’t that just a bit hypocritical?

Why don’t we put Christ first? Why not let Him be the first team, and then even let him coach? Why not make Him first in your life, then you don’t have to shout out those desperate pleas. Regular communication with Christ tends to lower the chance of desperate situations.

Folks, it all boils down to Faith. It is about where your faith is focused. We tend to trust the world until we realize the world has nothing for us. We need to start trusting Christ. Christ is always in our corner, He is always ready to heal, guide, love, or just hold us. Sometimes he answers with “No, not now”. But His “no” is always followed with, “Trust me, I have a better idea”.

Just a thought.

Shalom my friends. See you in church.
