For more than 40 years, Bonny Davis has been the voice of the Handy community and church. Ms. Davis took over the column at the retirement of Rosa King, whose husband was at that time pastor of Handy Church. No one could have been more diligent as Ms. Davis in her attempt to fill her role, which was to make sure that people who continued to live in and around Handy and especially those who left the area still felt “connected” to those roots...

Our Bible study on Friday evening at Handy Church was very encouraging as we finished our study in 2 Corinthians. The few in attendance also enjoyed cake and ice cream afterwards in honor of Ivan Sisco’s birthday July 17. We send him birthday greetings today and wish him many more. In our Sunday services we were fortunate to have some visitors with us that are very special to us and that was Merilee Pickins and her grandmother Doreen Brown. We hope they will return often...

Although strong winds hit the Handy Community on Saturday afternoon we were able to have services on Sunday morning, July 2. Several trees in and around the church and cemetery fell; however, we did not have any significant damage (for which we are so thankful). It was good to have Clara Ray back with us on Sunday morning after having been absent for several weeks, and Maggie Adair was also able to be with us once again...

Our services over this past weekend at Handy Church, as usual, were spiritually uplifting. It is always good to have special guests and especially those who participate, as did Larry and Diane Davis on Friday evening. They sang several songs for us and also participated in the Bible Study. Sunday morning, we had a special guest that came with Laverne Cothren and Vicky Elliott, Mrs. Brown from Doniphan who is a neighbor to Laverne. Our services at Handy Church continue to fluctuate in attendance as the summer has brought various activities to several families as well as sickness to some. We are pressing onward and upward as we plan for some future engagements. We were sorry that Karen Gant and Bonny Davis were unable to be there due to Bonny’s health issues, Bonny has suffered a light stroke which has left her right arm and leg not functioning properly...

What a beautiful day this past Sunday as we gathered together to worship God. Even though I (Bonny Davis) was unable to attend services at Handy Church the turnout was good and it was reported to have been a good service. We missed a few of our regulars, which included Cole and Audrey Watson, Billy Sisco, and the Leggetts, Joy and Bill. Clara and Arlin Ray were also unable to be there. What a wonderful day we had this past Sunday at Handy Church. We enjoyed the fellowship of a large crowd, much of whom were there for the sake of Bonny Davis for Mother’s Day. All of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were present, with the exception of just a few.   Of course, we also celebrated all of the mothers, some special gifts were given along with a small gift for all mothers present. ...

We are thankful to see our attendance up for services at Handy Church. On Friday evening we have Bible study. It is always enjoyable to be able to study together and continue to learn more about God’s word. Services over the weekend of April 23 were well attended with several first time visitors. It was good to have Landon, Addison, Kannon and Kashtyn Watson of Paragould, Ark. along with Addison’s parents, Shannon and Allison Nichols and a friend and her little boy. Also Gary and Shookie Hilton had a visitor with them as well. It was also good to have Kristy Brown, our pastors’s wife, back with us, Kristy has been suffering with some health issues for several weeks...

Our morning worship service this past Sunday was very uplifting and very well attended. It was so good to see Jerald Steele, especially since when we last saw him he had suffered a heart attack, but thank God he is doing much better and able to be with us. ...

Bro. Robert Brown brought a wonderful message this past Sunday at Handy Church. The message was pertaining to Jesus being the rock on which the church was built and that He is the solid rock on who we depend. We, at Handy Church, are so thankful for a merciful God who provides and protects us no matter the circumstances. With the recent winter storm that came through several in and around our community have been without power for several hours, however most were able to survive the circumstances although a bit uncomfortable at times. Bonny Davis and family have recently been gifted with a book written by Judy (Hurt) Fite, daughter of the late Henry and Eunice Hurt who was born and raised in Ripley County. The book is entitled “Gifts of a Century”, contains much information and true stories about rural schools, particularly in Missouri, and their history, as well as the teachers, students and everyone associated with their function. ...

The services at Handy Church on New Year’s Day were well attended. It was good to have our Pastor back with us. Bro Robert Brown was gone on vacation to spend time with his family during the Christmas holidays. We were pleased that Caleb Gant and his daughter, 5-year-old Gwendolyn were present in church at Handy last Sunday morning, as they live at Eminence which is quite a distance away from our location. Since Gwennie had spent the weekend with her grandmother, Karen, who lives at Doniphan, and would attend services at Handy with her, Caleb could pick her up there to take her home and share in the worship with us. ...

The Friday evening singing held this past Friday, Dec. 2 at Handy Church was enjoyed by all those in attendance. We appreciate the support shown to us by those who came out and joined us. The group enjoyed some good food as well as fellowship. The singings will continue throughout the winter unless inclement weather prevent us from doing so. Our Pastor, Bro. Robert Brown brought us a message from the book of John regarding the lady at the well of Jacob visiting with Jesus, it was a very familiar story to most of us and it also had a wonderful message in it. We ended the service with a song written by Polly Sisco entitled “The Woman At The Well”. The song tells the story from the scriptures and was very appropriate...

We regret to report the sad news that John D. Haney, formerly of the Handy community recently passed away at the age of 82. He was the son of Marion and Irene Haney, one of nine children. John D. served in the US Army and was given a military funeral, at Handy Church with burial in the Handy Cemetery on Friday, July 29. Bro. David Grubb was in charge of the proceedings...

What a wonderful surprise it was for Bonny Davis last Saturday evening when she responded to a knock on her front door and saw what, at first, appeared to be three strangers! Of course, upon realizing this, she was incredibly excited and thrilled; and they all rejoiced together!...

The congregation of Handy Church held its first singing of the 2022 season on Friday evening, May 6, beginning at 7 p.m., with approximately 40 in attendance. It was a pleasure for everyone to meet each other again, after not seeing one another (for the most part) since the previous one in late 2021. The group plans to continue on the same schedule until winter 2022 (exact dates will be determined in the future)...

It is our understanding that Cathy Schubert of Handy and Bonny Davis of Doniphan recently underwent some various health examinations at Poplar Bluff Imaging but have not yet been made aware of any of the cause for either. We find it to be extremely saddening to report the recent passing of a precious friend of the Handy Church congregation. Sixty-three old Gail Smith of Jonesboro, Ark. was a member of the talented Davis Family of Arkansas, who first become known to us several years ago, when they started coming to Handy Church on Friday evenings to participate in our monthly singing event. ...

The funeral services for Gary Bridges, 72 year old Vietnam War veteran, was held March 19 at the Clary Funeral home in Alton, Mo. Included in the large crowd of friends and relatives who attended the event were several from the Handy Community and are as follows: Ivan and Billy Sisco, Marguerite Adair, Cathy Schubert and June Watson. Some of us regret that we were unable to attend, and we send our deepest sympathy to all of the bereaved...

Although attendance was down, services at Handy Church last Sunday were uplifting and encouraging. Polly had been attending Sunday morning services faithfully and with great regularity until the last couple of months, when she started feeling progressively weaker, and we have become more and more concerned and hoped to boost her spirit a bit and cheer her up...

I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year. It still doesn’t seem right to be writing 2022 instead of 2021. About the time we get used to writing it, it will seem like it is time to move on 2023. Now that 2021 is over, we need to let it go and call it our past. We have a new year of new beginnings, a clean slate to start over. More important things than thinking only about 2021, let it stay in the rear view mirror. There are bigger and better things ahead. Just focus on what is in front of you. ...

It was a surprise blessing to have an unexpected visitor in worship services at Handy Church last Sunday morning. It was 4 year-old Chase Elliott, grandson of Vicky Elliott and great-grandson of Laverne Cothren, who both accompanied him that day. Chase was disappointed that Cole Watson was absent that morning, but was brave enough to replace him to pass the kids offering container in his stead, with accompaniment by his grandmother Vicky...

Worship service at Handy Church last Sunday morning was especially meaningful, as everyone seemed to feel the Christmas spirit with holiday hymns being sung and Bro. Robert preaching a Christmas-themed sermon. Even the church building itself reflected a sense of holiness with a brightly lit Christmas tree, which had been brought by John and Janet Hoskins the previous Sunday, and surrounded by a Nativity scene that several “good Samaritans” had arranged. ...

We may be getting spoiled to the mild, almost-balmy weather that has been prevailing in Ripley and surrounding counties for the last several days, as it may be replaced before long by the harsh winter chill we can expect any time. But, at least we can be thankful that we’re enjoying its pleasantness right now, and hopefully be more prepared for the change when it does arrive...

Although weekend services at Handy Church were fairly well attended last weekend, we regret to report that some regular members were, for various reasons, unable to do so. We pray that God will be with each need, realizing that He knows everyone’s problem and its severity, even before we request His divine intervention...

Several regular members of the Handy Church congregation were absent from last Sunday morning services due to illnesses and other hindrances. Cole Watson had spent the previous night with his cousin, William Gant, son of Clayton and Kristy Gant of Poplar Bluff. (Who celebrated his eighth birthday that Saturday). Karen Gant and Bonny Davis were both unable to be there, however it was fortunate that Johnny was back after having missed the previous week...

Bro. Robert Brown made the trip to Handy Church last Sunday with the intention of holding services as planned, but became ill and had to return home instead. He was accompanied by his wife Kristi, who explained to the congregation that Bro. Brown had developed a temperature before reaching the church...

The services at Handy Church over the weekend of Oct. 8-11 were spiritually uplifting, we are so thankful for our little church and the outreach that it has. It was a nice surprise to have Maggie Adair in our Friday evening Bible study where we are studying in the Book of Matthew...

Bonny Davis was only the second oldest person in attendance at a birthday celebration given in her honor, held last Saturday, Sept. 25, at Rocky River Pavilion in Doniphan. The event, hosted by Karen Gant and June Watson was in recognition of Bonny’s 90th birthday, which will occur Sept. ...

It was indeed encouraging to have Johnny Davis, Clara Ray and Vicky Elliott back in services at Handy Church on Sunday, Sept. 19 as all three had been absent for several weeks due to their illness or that of close relatives. Johnny Davis, in particular has been very weak (also unable to get enough sleep) for some time and had required a CT scan last Friday to determine the cause of a serious drop in hemoglobin...

Both the Friday evening Bible study and the Sunday morning worship services were sparsely attended due to the usual hindrances (Covid threat and various illnesses) although numbers increased on Sunday due to subsequent activities that followed. Included were a luncheon, a “Grandparent Day” celebration, and a baby shower...

The regular singing for the month of September was held at Handy Church last Friday evening, with only 16 persons in attendance. Although it was disappointing that we had so few present, we were thankful that the “Davis family” from Arkansas was well represented and provided several lovely songs with their own guitar and piano accompaniment. It was also a blessing that Ervin Sisco of Gladstone sang a solo, “I am a pilgrim”, accompanied by his own guitar...

It was indeed a pleasure for Karen Gant and many of her close relatives around, and in Doniphan to have Karen’s granddaughter, Gwendolyn Gant of Eminence over as a guest last weekend. “Gwenny” who is such a lively and cheerful child that she brings an aura of happiness to everyone who knows her (especially her maw-maw Karen; grandma Davis and aunt June)...

It was indeed a pleasure to receive information from June Watson indicating that she had recently heard from Katherine Burke, who mentioned enjoying reading this article regularly. It is wonderfully gratifying to know that the article brings some happiness to readers and we want everyone to know how much it means to receive favorable comments...

Various health problems among members of Handy Church were blamed for the poor attendance in recent weekend services. Thankfully, the dreaded Covid disease has still been avoided by those who regularly attend but various other maladies were responsible for keeping Vicky Elliott, Bonny and Johnny Davis, Karen Gant and Polly Sisco home on Friday evening and Sunday morning. ...

The “First Friday” singing for the current month, was held at Handy Church on Aug. 6, and was fairly well attended, although the ongoing threat of the Covid virus remains a deterrent to public gatherings of any kind. We thank God for His divine protection over us all, and plead that He continues to care for us, as well as others...

We had a wonderful service this past Sunday morning, July 4. Bro. Robert Brown had returned from the convention he attended in Denver and his wife was also able to be with us as well. It was indeed a pleasure to have former Pastor Bob Featherston and his wife Jeanetta with us this past Sunday, June 27. Bro. Bob was filling-in in the absence of our regular pastor, Robert Brown who was attending the National Church of God convention in Denver, Colo. ...

It was a pleasant experience to have a somewhat greater than average attendance in the Sunday morning service held at Handy Church on June 20. We were especially glad to have Danny Ray and Richie and Sarah Reynolds present, after their absence of several weeks; but sorry that more of the extended Ray family were hindered from being there...

It was gratifying for Pastor Robert Brown and the congregation of Handy Church to welcome back John and Janet Hoskins, after their absence from church for several weeks due to Janet’s health problems. We were also pleased that Ivan Sisco was able to return on Sunday after his absence from our group due to a health issue. Ivan and his sweet wife Billy are faithful to attend and fulfill their individual responsibilities when at all possible...

Although attendance at the last singing held at Handy Church on June 4, was less than its average prior to the onset of the “COVID Pandemic”. We were thrilled that some came from 50-mile distance; and several members of the “Davis family” of Arkansas also managed to be there...

We were surprised but elated to once again have Mary Norris of Van Buren with us along with her sister Kay O’Rear of Jefferson City, Mo. It is always our pleasure to have these ladies and appreciate their desire to be with us...

Worship services at Handy Church for Sunday, May 23, were well attended, and it was a nice surprise to have Doug Adair of Kansas City present. Doug only recently moved back to Kansas City after changing jobs. He is presently staying with his mother, Maggie Adair, in Kansas City, pending a start with a new job. Due to various hindrances Doug had not visited relatives at Handy for several months, and it was a real treat for us to welcome him back again, even for a brief visit...

What a glorious surprise it was last Sunday morning (May 16) to some of the Handy Church congregation when, upon arriving for the church service, they found an “old” friend already in attendance. It was Mary (Bristol) Norris, an adored member of the Jay and Nancy Bristol family who at one time attended our services regularly...

The dreary weather that prevailed throughout Mother’s Day 2021 did very little to dampen the spirits of those who attended worship services at Handy Church that morning. It was uplifting to have several persons present who had not attended since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and a few whose last visit occurred on Mother’s Day 2020...

It is a pleasure to report that the numbers present in both the Friday evening Bible study and the Sunday morning service are actually increasing, thanks to more pleasant weather conditions and less absence due to health problems. We were especially thankful that Johnny Davis was able to attend both of last week’s services and Vicky Elliott was back on Sunday, with her mother, Laverne Cothren in accompaniment. ...

An especially blessed worship service was enjoyed at Handy Church last Sunday morning by about 20 persons, including Pastor Robert Brown and his wife Kristy. We were thankful to have two visitors, T.J and Ava, friends of Audrey Watson. It was good to have Clara Ray back with us, after an extended absence due to the Covid-19 threat, we did however, miss her husband Arlin who was unable to attend. ...

It is heartbreaking to report the loss of 60 year old Ronnie Melton, husband of Peggy (Ray) Melton of Doniphan. Ronnie passed away on April 18, 2021, after a long bout with liver disease. The Ray and Melton families are very much in our thoughts and prayers. May God bless each member of the families, especially Ronnie’s wife and parents. Services at Handy Church over the weekend were quite pleasant, although the Sunday morning congregation was considerably less than on the previous weekend. The situation was understandable, since Easter Sunday always attracts more people than any other Sunday of the year. Of course, we’re not complaining; that’s not unusual, and we’re just thankful to have everyone who can make it...

Easter Sunday brings so much pleasure and gratitude for all of God’s blessings that it is difficult to describe each one to the extent we hope to achieve. However, we certainly don’t want to omit mentioning the sheer loveliness of the sunshiny weather that prevailed, making it possible for a great number (31 the most we have had in the year 2021) nor the fact that both Rev. and Mrs. Robert Brown were present. (Mrs. Brown often does not feel like accompanying Mr. Brown)...

The morning services of March 28 at Handy Church were well attended and very uplifting as our regular pianist (Johnny Davis) was able to be with us that day. We also are praising God for answered prayer on behalf of Joe Watson who underwent emergency gallbladder surgery on Friday morning. The surgery went well and Joe is recuperating very well. We also had others with special needs that the Lord answered our prayers on their behalf as well. We thank God for his goodness...

We were pleased that most of our regular congregation was present in worship services at Handy Church last Sunday morning, although only a few managed to attend the previous Friday evening Bible Study. It was a special treat to see Jerald Steele in accompaniment with Vicky Elliott and her mother Lavern, since Jerald lives and works in Illinois which therefore hinders him from being here regularly...

Our hearts are heavily burdened by the numerous tragic deaths that have occurred among our ever-widening circle of friends and relatives. We extend our deepest sympathy to all of their loved ones left to mourn their passing. Included are: Ricky Dale, Keith Dale, John Allen Haney, all of whom we knew well but have had little contact with them; and several others who we didn’t actually know, yet feel a closeness to those left behind...

It was indeed a blessing to be in the house of the Lord last Sunday (March 7), with the moderately warm weather surrounding us. We were thrilled to have John and Janet Hoskins with us once again after they had been absent for a week or so due to having some special company at their home. We were happy that Laverne Cothern attended services again that morning along with her daughter Vicky and hope they continue to meet with us regularly...

The recent news that 89 year-old Rose (Burrows) Klepzig had passed away was heart-breaking to everyone who knew her and especially to friends and relatives throughout Ripley and Carter counties. Although she had not been in close contact with Bonny Davis for several years, the two were quite fond of each other, having graduated together from Fremont High School in May of 1949, along with several others...

Due to recent inclement weather conditions, including snow covered roads to church grounds, and sub-zero temperatures, worship services at Handy have been canceled for the past two weeks. We are so thankful to see warmer weather and bright sunshine again with most of the snow disappearing...

The recent tragic news that Donna (Roberson) Miller had passed away was incredibly heart-breaking to all who knew her. Although the past and current congregation of Handy church had learned of her illness (from the Covid-19 disease and complications), most of us had no idea that her suffering would result in death...

The regularly scheduled Bible Study at Handy Church on Jan. 15 was canceled due to the illness of one member who is vital to its continuity barring unforeseen circumstances, the service will take place as usual next Friday and thereafter. Due to the continued threat of the spread of the Covid-19 virus, some of our faithful members of regular Sunday morning services still feel it unwise to convene while the disease continues to rage. ...

It was good to have Bro. Robert Brown and his wife Kristy back with us in services for the weekend of Jan. 10 after having been on vacation for a couple of weeks. It was also good to have some of our regular members back as well. We missed our regular pastor, Bro. Robert Brown, at Handy Church last Sunday, Dec. 27, as he had other obligations that required priority; however, Christi Kirby, was prepared to “fill in” as leader in the service and gave an interesting devotional reading which was met with great appreciation by listeners. Bro. Brown will be absent again next Sunday, Jan. 3 and hopes to return to his post on Jan. 10...

The regular Friday evening Bible study, scheduled for Dec. 18, was canceled due to the Covid-19 threat and resulting illness. However, the Sunday morning service was held on Dec. 20 with several regular members being absent, but enough others present to make up the difference in the total members present...

Our thoughts and prayers are with Cathy Schubert, who recently underwent outpatient surgery on one of her knees at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. According to our sources the operation was quite successful, and the patient is recuperating nicely at home. Although she, no doubt was enduring a lot of pain, both before and after the operation. We truly thank God for his healing power, as we continue to hold Cathy up in prayers...

It was a pleasure to have a “first-time” visitor present in last Sunday’s morning service at Handy Church. His name is Charles and he’s a friend and co-worker of Laura Ray whom he accompanied. We were also glad that Sarah Reynolds and Sam Ray managed to be there, as all of members of the extended Danny Ray family have had various hindrances from attending regularly for several months; and we have missed them terribly...

It was a pleasant surprise last Sunday, Nov. 21, when several members of the Handy Church congregation who have been unable to attend for several months, showed up unexpectedly for the morning service. Included were: Dwain and Donna Miller, both of whom are staying with George and Velma Byrd who require near constant care; and Richie and Sarah Reynolds and Sam Ray all of whom have various reasons for not attending regularly. ...

With  the 2020 regular deer-hunting season under way, we understand that several relatives of Handy residents and Handy Church attendees are present in the area; included in that group is Doug and Jeff Adair, Dr. Jim Probst and nephew Brad; Jason Butcher (longtime friend of Doug and Jeff), his two sons and a friend (whose name is not available at this time). ...

The pastor and congregation of Handy Church were delighted on Sunday morning, Nov. 8, to have Johnny Davis back in services with us after his absence of several weeks due to severe health issues. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Blackshear family after the death of David Blackshear who passed away on Oct. 26 at his home.  May God bless and comfort all of his loved ones and friends. Our hearts are filled with remorse after learning of the recent passing of Jerry Heavin, beloved brother of Janet Hoskins of Fremont. Janet and her husband John are valued members of Handy Church and greatly loved by all, as are other surviving members of the large Paul and Ora Heavin family (former resident of the nearby “Big Barren” community). Our thoughts and prayers are with Polly Sisco, whose breathing problems have worsened recently, thus causing her absence from services from Handy Church last Sunday morning. (Mrs. Sisco rarely misses a Sunday service, so it is extremely concerning when she doesn’t make it.) It was a pleasant surprise for the Handy Church congregation last Sunday when two visitors from Oklahoma “showed up” for the morning service. They were Mason and Brooke Brown, who accompanied Mason’s parents, Rev. and Mrs. Robert Brown. We were also happy to see five members of the Danny Ray family, who had attended regularly for years, but had transportation problems and other hindrances, which have hindered them from being present for several months...

It was a blessing for Bonny Davis to be back in services at Handy Church on Sept. 27, after being absent for the two previous Sundays due to illness. Although Mrs. Davis’s condition has improved considerably the problem still exists and the cause has still not been identified and additional testing is being scheduled. However, she sends thanks to everyone for the many prayers that have been sent up on her behalf, as they have definitely made a difference...

Much gratitude is sent by Bonny Davis to family members and friends who have assisted her throughout the past few weeks in compiling and conveying this humble report to The Prospect-News. Due to a bout with kidney infection and complications, Bonny has found it too painful to continue to providing it without their generosity. Thankfully, Bonny’s condition is improving and we thank God for answered prayer on her behalf...

Worship services held over the weekend of Sept. 4-6 were well attended. It was wonderful that Johnny Davis was able to attend Friday night services and participate with piano accompaniment during the song service. Due to the health issues that the writer of this article has encountered this article will be shorter than usual. We are happy to report that Johnny Davis is home and improving daily. Although he is improving he is still unable to use the left leg that had the broken bone and therefore is confined mostly to a walker or wheelchair. We are so thankful that he is doing as well as he is and give God the glory for answered prayers...

It was a pleasure to have Kristy Brown (Pastor Robert’s wife) present in worship services held at Handy last Sunday. Kristy is unable to attend regularly due to health problems and other hindrances but we are thankful that Brother Robert is faithful to be here every week except in rare, instances, even though Kristy often has to miss...

Due to various difficulties in the schedule by which this report is given it will be more brief than usual; however, we certainly don’t want to fail to send thanks to the numerous friends and relatives who gathered last Saturday at Johnny Davis’ residence in Handy to assist in improving its structural condition.(Johnny continues to be confined in Riverways Manor with an unhealed broken leg, and is to undergo surgery on Friday, Aug. 21.)...

We send thanks to everyone for their prayers and encouragement on behalf of Johnny Davis, who currently remains a patient in the Riverways Manor at Van Buren. It was good to have Pastor Robert Brown back on Sunday, July 26 for morning worship services at Handy Church, after his absence the previous week. Bro. Robert and his wife Kristy took a short vacation in order to visit with their new grandbaby and her parents, who live in Alaska. Although we missed the Browns we were happy that they were able to go for a visit and enjoy their vacation...

Johnny Davis, after being hospitalized at West Plains Hospital on an emergency basis it was discovered that the injury to his right leg had become infected. His condition was causing him continuous extreme pain, and the cast he had been fitted with had to be removed and another surgery performed on the leg. ...

Joe and June Watson and Jimmy Davis of Campbell, Mo. all worked on Johnny’s garden most of the day last Saturday to keep it flourishing. The Watson’s have spent many hours at keeping Johnny’s house, garden and grounds from “going to pot” and we’re extremely thankful to have assistance from Jimmy, who has a full schedule of his own (pastoring Campbell Assembly of God and also dealing in hospice care.)...

While we did not have a large crowd present at Handy Church last Sunday morning, it was gratifying (since it happened to be Father’s Day) that several dads were there, to receive special recognition by the presentation of a gift for certain qualities each one possessed. ...

It was encouraging to the Handy Church congregation last Sunday morning (June 14) to have Britanni Elliott of Raymondville back with us although her husband and children (who accompanied her the previous Sunday) were involved in other activities which prevented them from coming with her. ...

It is always refreshing to the pastor and congregation at any church to have first-time visitors in their worship services; and this was certainly the case at Handy Church last Sunday morning. The most recent ones were a foursome from Raymondville, Mo., consisting of Terry and Brittani Elliott and their two children, Emma and Wyatt. ...

We missed John and Janet Hoskins and the Jason Howard family in services at Handy Church on Sunday, May 31, and are hoping to have them all back again in the future. We have also missed Arlin and Clara Ray from services ever since the Covid 19 threat has existed. We pray that a vaccine will soon be approved and we know church congregations everywhere will increase in number when it is safe to attend...

We are so grieved by the recent report that Rex Thompson, 73 year old resident of Wilderness had passed away. Mr. Thompson was a wonderful Christian, who for several years, visited at Handy Church along with his sweet wife Ruth. Our thoughts and prayers are with Joe Watson, who recently became very ill and was taken to a doctor at Poplar Bluff Hospital on an emergency basis. Although he had been suffering from chest and abdomen pains, it was determined that his heart seemed to be normal; however, a gall bladder problem was suspected. ...

We were pleased to have 19 persons in attendance at Handy Church for worship services on Sunday morning, May 10. The recent addition of the Howard family from Eastwood to our regular group is a great blessing, and it was a special surprise for their daughter Lexie of Doniphan to accompany Jason, Laura and son Jesse that day. It was also good to have Vicky Elliott back after her recent absences due to the Covid-19 threat...

The services at Handy Church over the weekend of May 1-3 were better attended than usual. It was good to have Gary and Shookie Hilton back with us after having to be out for quite some time. We were also fortunate to have Pastor Robert Brown’s mother-in-law Betty back with us as well. It was great to have everyone and we truly enjoyed our time of worship together...

While only a “handful” of regular members of Handy Church managed to gather for morning worship services on Sunday, April 26, it was encouraging to have a “first-time” visitor present that morning. It was Pastor Robert Brown’s mother-in-law Betty from Grandby, Mo. Betty seemed to enjoy every segment of the event, and remarked afterward of how pleasant the  scenic experience of the trip to the meeting had been.  We hope Betty will join us again as often as it is feasible for her to do so...

Bonny Davis received a letter on Friday, April 17 from Beverly Arnold, of Kuna, Idaho in which she reported that her father, Gale Thompson had passed away on April 10. Gale was 93 years old, and would have reached the age of 94 had he lived until April 14. The news of his death was deeply saddening to his numerous relatives in Ripley and Carter County, especially the Bonny Davis family...

Worship services held at Handy Church last Sunday morning were fairly well attended, although the publicized threat of the rampant “coronavirus” disease led several regular attendees to “stay home” rather than convene with others. It was truly gratifying for some members of the Handy Church congregation last Sunday morning, when they found Johnny Davis already there and perched on the piano bench in preparation for accompaniment to the song service. Although the weather was gloomy, it was like a burst of sunshine when two ladies, who rarely find it possible to attend our meetings, also entered the sanctuary. ...

The regular monthly singing, held at Handy Church last Friday evening, March 6, was well attended by representations of several different congregations, in addition to our own. Although we were without musical accompaniment for the various groups of participants it was gratifying that most groups that sung bravely performed “acapella” and no one complained about the absence of an accompanist! Fortunately Jimmy Boyles from the Doniphan Emmanuel Baptist church sings solo without music anyway, and his wife plays her own instrument; and their friend Marie brings her own tape which provides accompaniment for her songs.. ...

It was a nice surprise for last Friday evening’s Bible study group of Handy Church when they were joined by Jason Howard of Eastwood Community. We were not aware that Jason and his family had moved to Eastwood from their former residence near Doniphan, so it was quite a thrill when he showed up that night. ...

Attendance at the Sunday morning church services was sparse due to illness, stormy weather or transportation problems for some of the regular members. We send our deepest sympathy to friends and family members of Lee Ollar, who passed away on Feb. 4, at the age of 98. Mr. Ollar currently resided near Doniphan, but formerly lived with his family in St. Louis for many years and spent much of the rest of his life on a farm near Handy. Mr. Ollar who was a World War II veteran was greatly admired and adored by young and old alike. He will be sadly missed...

Services at Handy Church for Jan. 24 and 26 were well attended, although Arlin and Clara Ray and Johnny Davis were absent due to illness. We appreciated Brother Robert Brown’s excellent message on baptism as it was defined in Luke, Chapter 3; and we were impressed that Cole Watson sang four songs using a microphone, even though he had no accompaniment. ...

The worship services at Handy Church over the weekend of Jan. 17-19 were very inspiring and uplifting. In our Bible study on Friday evenings we are now studying in Ecclesiastes and those who attend are enjoying that time together as well as the Sunday morning worship service and Sunday school. We felt very blessed that last weekend’s services at Handy Church were not interrupted by severe weather conditions, as they were in large areas of the country. Our sympathy goes out to all residents whose activities were limited in that way or even suffered loss of life or loved ones. We pray that God will reach down and comfort each affected family...

The regular monthly gospel “sing-a-long”, held at Handy Church last Friday evening, was quite enjoyable in spite of the fact that some of our regular attendees were unable to come, due to various hindrances. It was a nice surprise, however, that Doug Adair of Nevada, who spent the weekend in Handy, was present at the event for the first time in a long time! (Doug added his bass voice to that of other vocal groups.) We were also happy that Doug Baker, Evelyn Montgomery and Harold and Ava Wood, all members of the New Macedonia Church, were present, as they ere absent during recent months due to unfavorable circumstances.. ...

Ripley and Carter County residents are grieved by the knowledge that Tim Lewis passed away on Dec. 26. We extend our deepest sympathy to Tim’s surviving relatives and many friends, and are praying earnestly that God will comfort and sustain them through this difficult time...

Although illnesses for some, and unpleasant weather conditions or transportation problems, continue to keep attendance numbers down at Handy Church, our “faithful few“ persist in gathering there as regularly as possible. Attendance at the Friday Bible study at Handy Church on Nov. 29 was “sparse” due to a combination of illnesses (of some regular attendees) and dreary weather conditions that affects many of us. However, attendance at the service held on the following Sunday was near normal, with most of our regulars back, eager to join in fellowship and friendliness. ...

Congrats to 12-year-old Audrey Watson, daughter of Mickey Watson and Kelli Watson, who was the first successful deer hunter of the extended Watson family during the regular 2019 deer hunting season. Audrey harvested a young doe on the very first day of the season.  We are proud of you, Audrey! And we hope to have more successes to report for other youngsters of the Watson family and  others in the area...

The monthly inspirational singing, held at Handy Church on Nov. 1 was well attended, although we missed several members of the ”Arkansas Davis Family”, who were absent due to various hindrances unknown to us.
