I have been so blessed by wonderful people in my lifetime. I know I have talked about my grandmother, Virgie Farmer Nickell. Children can learn so much from their grandparents on both sides of their family. Hopefully parents, you allow your children to grow up being able to learn from all sides, not just from one side. I was blessed that my grandmother took the time and was patient enough to teach me to cook, sew, can and study the Bible.
I spent a couple of days preparing plums to make jelly from. If you have never made plum jelly you should try. Plums make the prettiest red jelly, so do crabapples. I try to can all summer, just so I can give to my children at Christmas a little bit of love that I have just making it for them. Hopefully, when I am no longer here they will remember just how much I loved them to do this for them.
Soon, I will be getting peaches to make into peach jam and later maybe some apples for apple butter. I hope to make lots of homemade salsa and some bread and butter pickles. I know you can go to the store and get it cheaper and less work. Thing is, when I can, I like to know each jar is filled with love and good memories of me for them. I love my children more than they may ever realize and I hope some day they will all remember that.
Bunco will be on Thursday, June 27 at the Ponder Community Center on Hwy. 142W. Please bring a covered dish, finger food or snack. Come enjoy the fun and fellowship of playing Bunco. Starts at 6 p.m., see you there.
Hard to believe that June is already half over. July is just around the corner, also just around the corner I will be celebrating my 68th birthday on the 3rd of July. My parents didn’t really have birthday parties for me. Instead we would always come down to Doniphan on vacation over the 4th of July celebration. We would camp out for a week and sometimes two weeks. The one thing that we always enjoyed were the canoe races, as my Uncle Ray Joe Hastings was always in the race. Also, many other local people who would race. That was the highlight of vacation, plus my mom and dad, Corinne and Prientus Hastings called it my birthday party. They would tell me, just look how many people are here for your birthday. Right, most of them didn’t even know who we were. Yet lwe made ots of good memories and I loved to watch the parade of those running for Miss Current River. Memories are something no one can take away from you, some are not good ones. Yet the good does outweigh the bad. I was blessed that was for sure.
I pray that the Lord will bless you with an awesome week. Keep us safe from the storms that may come our way. Keep your mighty hand on those who are on the river and enjoying all that you give to us. Lord we are so blessed with a beautiful town of Doniphan and all it’s beauty. Remember that God loves you and so do I. We are special and one of a kind, we are all in God’s image. Amen
