Writing Prompt #2 for Current River Writers
I survived the composition of the first prompt. In my head writing a poem made it easier for me to attempt fiction. I'm automatically in the frame of mind to use the fewest words possible to express an emotion. Rhyming seemed to blur the focus that I was making it all up - writing fiction.
For writing Prompt #2 I used a different approach but it still is not straight prose. Prompt #2: There is a new kid in school who wants to be your friend, but you are shy. What do you do? (from child's perspective through middle-school age)
Dear IF,
I need new places to hide during recess. Last week a new girl came. The teacher called her Michelle. She stared at me. Maybe I stared back. Why did I change my mind and put that yellow dress on? It was just like the new girl’s.
Dear IF,
I didn’t want Monday to come. Teacher made me stop running to recess. I fell down and had to see the nurse for a bandaid. That wasn’t so bad. The new girl wasn’t in there. We did not wear the same thing today, just the same color - green.
Dear IF,
My classmates are not calling me names any more. They used to tease me because my hair’s red. That girl has red hair.
Dear IF,
Teacher says we have show-and-tell next week. That’s my favorite subject next to recess and reading. Teacher brings cookies.
Dear IF,
Please tell me what to take for show-and-tell. Deciding is hard.
Dear IF,
It’s between ET and my spirograph. When I’m eating my cocoa puffs tomorrow before the bus comes, I’ll decide.
Dear IF,
ET won. I dressed him in one of Jake’’s sweaters. Jake shakes even when it’s not cold. I wish we could take our pets. It’s time to meet the bus.
Dear IF,
That new girl was on my bus today. I did not sit with her. We both had our show-and-tells in Wal-Mart bags. She brought an ET too. Hers wore a sweater, too.
Dear IF,
Michelle will be on the bus every day. She lives around the corner.
Dear IF,
Michelle saves a seat for me. After school we take Jake and Mimi for walks. Mimi is not a chihuahua but yorkies are cute. We decided we’d both be chefs for Halloween. Chellee’’s my friend. We share our cookies.
