OVER-Thinking?
Are we over-obsessed with those who seem to overdress, overdo, overeat and…overthink? The problem might not be with the ones overobsessing, overdressing, overdoing, overeating or overthinking, but with the ones delivering the verdicts.
Remember hearing, “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right”? There you go. To get it ‘right’ one might appear a bit obsessive in the process. Example: I don’t recall issues learning to tie my shoes. Nothing to obsess about. But teaching my son to tie his…different story. I read and demostrated then researched and re-demonstrated on toys, then researched the best time in development to teach it. Until it was his idea, I stopped to avoid making him the frazzled obsesser his mother was. I gave up. His paternal grandma taught him in a flash.
I never consider myself overdressed. I’m either dressed or not. If I’m wearing it, it’s what I meant to put on. (Granted, I might have changed everything a few times trying to get comfortable in attire that matches my mood but if I’m wearing it, I intend to look just as I look).
“You’re overdoing it.” I’ve heard that judgment proclaimed to others and to me. We’re doing what we do the way we do it because that’s the way it seems worth doing. The judgmental onlookers either lack our vision or are lazy.
If you see me eating a whole package of chocolate covered grahams, settle down. I skipped a meal to do that. If I am eating from a party bag of peanut M&M’s, it’s the breaking of a five-year M&M fast. (True story. I broke the fast to celebrate canoeing Current River from Baptist Camp to Doniphan. I survived. I deserved the whole bag).
It’s silly to accuse anyone of overthinking; folks either think or they don’t. When I’m accused of overthinking, it simply means I’m over-talking. I’ll keep my mouth shut next time.
